Sleep is SO underrated.
The research shows us, if we don’t get enough sleep, it can have a numerous negative consequences. It also has a huge impact on our quality of life
What 20 years of research shows us that the recommended it 7-9 hours. Anything consistently 6 hours or below significantly increases risk of the following:
❗Negative impact on mental and physical health
❗Reduced performance and motor skill ability
❗Increase risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer
❗Increases risk of weight gain
❗Increase risk of developing Alzheimers
❗Reduces gene expression linked to cellular stress
Lack of sleep can also lead to us not living as long.
The importance of sleep is CRUCIAL to both physical and mental wellbeing
Here are some Top Tips for brilliant sleep hygiene
Make sure all devices and white light before sleep are off minimum of an hour.
Clear out the clutter
If you have worries or anything on your mind before bed, write everything down before you go to sleep.
Avoid all stimulants before sleep, including caffeine and alcohol 1/4 of caffeine is still in your system 12 hours later!
Do something relaxing before bed. Go for a gentle walk, take a bath or have a read. Ensure this is your time. Meditation before bed is a good idea. This can be as short as ten minutes. There are lots of guided meditations on YouTube you can access.
A zen for good sleep
Remove all clocks and screens. Ensure your room is dark and remove anything that would distract you from sleep, or keep you awake in the middle of the night. Ensure your room is fully ventilated.
The important thing is to be as relaxed as you can before bed. If you don’t switch off, from emails, work or other distractions, it can lead to poor sleep.
If you suffer with poor sleep, once you start to change up your routine, it can make a huge difference. Getting out of bad habits and creating new ones is important and will help you make a big shift.
I can’t stress the importance of a good nights sleep. It is connected to a variety of mental wellbeing and health complaints and ALL the research points to good sleep leading to improvements in other areas of your life. Not only will you feel happier and more content throughout the day, with improved mood and functioning, your productivity will sky rocket.
